When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression

I feel lied to and disheartened. Why was I read books, as a child in elementary school, that talked of segregation and racial discrimination as a thing of the past? Why was I told America would always be the greatest country in the world?

I love my country, but today I realize it is more flawed than I could have ever known. This nation did not vote with their hearts or with a sense of empathy for others. Our nation decided and voted out of hatred and fear. I have to ask, where is our compassion?

I am dismayed by the implications this election will induce. I am afraid for immigrants, non-white citizens, the LGBTQ community, women, and the disabled. My heart goes out to all those struggling to cope with the brutal reality of our nation’s current mindset.
Our country cannot become great again if it’s ideals are rooted in exclusion and division. I am not inclined to give up this sacred fight for equality, and cannot sit by and excuse America’s lapse in humanity.

Today marks the day where it is more important than ever to be kind, to be motivated, and to be better people. The world is going to need good, genuine hearts. We need sensitivity and we need empathy. There is still love, even in a world that hides behind platforms of hate.

"It’s strange how your childhood sort of feels like forever. Then suddenly you’re sixteen and the world becomes an hourglass and you’re watching the sand pile up at the wrong end. And you’re thinking of how when you were just a kid, your heartbeat was like a kick drum at a rock show, and now it’s just a time bomb ticking out. And it’s sad. And you want to forget about dying. But mostly you just want to forget about saying goodbye."
